Kettlebells, Squats and Stone Lifting

If that title doesn't make your testosterone increase than I don't know what will. If you want a strong and powerful lower body, you have to be able to explode with the hips and lift big weights. That is what this workout was all about.

I started with some kettlebell swings to get the blood flowing and prime the nervous system. The idea here was to really pop the hips through on each rep. This drill will improve your jumping, tackling and overall athletic abilities.

Next I alternated sets between front squats and stone lifting. The front squat will build powerful legs for sure, but it also makes your abs and upper back extremely strong. As for stone lifting, that takes strength training to a whole new level. The weight is awkward, has no handles, is right on the ground and you have to use your whole body to lift it. I don't think anything builds, or displays, brute strength like stone lifting. It is about as manly a lift as you do, unless you use a light stone!

All this hard and heavy lower body work has it's benefits. If you just want to look good, that's fine. Just don't be one of those light bulb physique dweebs I see at the mall. If you can wear skinny jeans, or heck even normal jeans, your legs are too damn small. Strong, muscular legs (and glutes) display physical strength and athleticism that chicks dig. As for sports, if you want to be explosive, you need to get your squat on son. I remember my rugby and football days. I wasn't much of a tackler until I started squatting for real. Once I could squat 1.5x my bodyweight for reps (remember this was in high school), I started laying guys out. The amount of power I could generate went through the roof. Also, the extra meat all that squatting and deadlifting put on my traps protected my body from unpadded hitting in rugby.

Lifting stones will do everything that squatting and deadlifting does for you, and more. It will force your arms and different parts of your back to work like nothing before. Plus, it makes you feel like an ancient warrior, which is extremely important, at least to me!

Here is the workout I did. If you don't have a stone trainer or a real live stone to lift, do deadlifts taking a wide snatch grip while standing on a 45lb plate. You can blame the soreness in your back on me.

  • Hand to Hand Kettlebell Swings
    • 2 x 50 to warm up
  • Front Squat
    • worked up to a max single
  • Stone Lifting
    • using a stone trainer
    • started with a pickup and carry, as the weight increased just tried to do a full lift and extension
    • did one set of stone lifting between each set of front squats
Here is a video of some indoor stone lifting.

Now here is stone lifting taken to the extreme!
